Steps

  1. Have an incentive. Is a friend coming round? Are you moving/going on vacation anywhere? Are you having difficulty finding your possessions beneath the knee-high pile of clutter covering your floor? Or are your parents forever asking you to tidy it up? All of these can be good reasons to get cleaning!
  2. Decide what is essential, preferable, and unnecessary for your room. This will help you prioritize what you want sitting out, and what you can afford to stash away most of the time!
  3. Find storage space. Dresser/desk drawers, closets, space under the bed, attics/basements, spare rooms. Whatever works, put your extra stuff there. Have a system for storing clothes, both clean and dirty.
  4. Pick up your stuff. Start with large items first, then move on to papers, etc.
  5. Get all the clutter from around your room and put it all away neatly.Follow the simple rule of “taking something out and then putting it right back”. Sing the cleanup song, if you must!
  6. Keep the room clean by vacuuming, scrubbing, washing, dusting, or whatever else you need to do to keep it presentable. If your stuff starts accumulating again, just take a few minutes each day to put everything where it belongs. Take a few minutes every night before you go to bed and make sure everything is in it’s place and neatly put away.
  7. Plan one or two days a week that you pick-up, dust, vacuum, and re-organize your items. Or each night before bed, examine your room to make sure everything is in its correct place. If you have a carpet, vacuum it up, or if you have a laminate floor sweep and mop up.
  8. Try to make a deal with your parents concerning you getting a reward every month for your room staying clean, neat and organized; even if it is just a small treat, it’s still worth it!
  9. Do you like the feeling of your room being clean? Do you like that feeling that everything is fine, and you can relax? If so, those are more reasons to clean your room!
  10. Make sure your all your drawers are shut, such as your dresser, night table, or desk.
  11. If you like your room being tidy then when events come up like Birthdays , Christmas etc.t. Try get rid of your old stuff. You can donate them to charities, hospitals, etc.

Tips

  • Try to reward yourself in some way every time you clean your room. This might be anything from having a cookie to seeing your favorite program on TV. Rewards don’t always have to be big. They are simply something you can enjoy that you wouldn’t normally.
  • Everyone goes about tasks differently. Some people prefer cleaning a bit everyday; others like to attack everything in one sitting. Find out what works best for you.
  • Find storage spaces and when you do, put your things in there, but have a system. It can be that all your papers about hobbies can go in a green folder and the green folder goes into the white binder and goes on the first shelf. Whatever works best for you, do it.
  • Remind yourself if your room is clean, you can have friends over more often!

Warnings

  • There’s a difference between clean, neat/tidy, organized, and keeping everything clean. For a bedroom to truly function well, all four of these qualities must be met.
    • Clean: not dirty. This is when you wipe the dust off the bookshelf, vacuum the carpet, scrub the floors.
    • Neat/Tidy: Looking presentable. Straighten the books on the shelf, keeping all your pencils the right way up. Sometimes, even the little things can make a big difference.
    • Organized: Ah, the most misunderstood term of all. Organized means that you are/will be able to find anything in the room. You have a ‘home’ for all of your belongings. Now, not only can you impress yourself by looking good, you will impress others!
    • Keeping everything clean: If you have different shelves that are organized well, don’t put something where it doesn’t go: it makes you disorganized and might mess up a clean room. If you throw your T-shirt where your tax papers are, it messes everything up.
  • As you complete a task, stop and look to see if it is correct. You don’t want to not have something wrong and you start something else. So when the task is complete go on and finish cleaning. (Ex. Your dresser is disorganized, you cleaned it all up and then you will check to make sure everything is in its correct spot.)
  • Is under your bed dirty? This is what you should do. Slide and remove everything from under your bed and put it in the middle of the floor. Go through the things you’ll need. If you like something really bad, keep it but put it in an organized place. Do not keep everything like a slob, force yourself to throw it out because you won’t have anymore junk. If there is food under your bed, then immediately remove it before pests come and take over.

How to Create Your Dream Room

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Here are some tips to create your dream room. Have fun!

Steps

  1. Draw or create your dream room. Go to pbteen.com and check out the design studio, or go to dressupgames.com and find some cool room design games. You can even use The Sims 2 or The Sims 3! This should help get your creativity going!
  2. Clean out your room! Plan with a parent and set a date to go to an orphanage, the salvation army, set up a garage sale (this is a great idea if you don’t have money to buy new furniture, or if you need more money) another place where you could drop off your old furniture, games and toys. When cleaning, Put on some fun, upbeat music! This should really help you get going. Set up your stuff into 4 piles: Throw away, Give Away, Keep, Recycle. Start a small area at a time, such as under the bed, then closet, then bookshelf, etc. Have huge garbage bins handy and a hamper/clothing bin for clothes lying around. Also, get rid of dust, dirt and other gross things with feather dusters and pledge. Another cool idea is to pretend your on a cleaning game show. It may seem weird but you can really get into it, especially if you video tape yourself on a computer or camera!
  3. Paint! Choose a color that will go with you theme. Start painting now, while your room is empty. It will be much easier. Try choosing light colors to make your room look spacious.
  4. Go shopping! Okay, this is the fun part! Go to all different stores, from PB teen to salvation army! Here is my personal favorites: TJMaxx, Pottery Barn Teens, (pbteen.com), Ikea (ikea.com) get basic furniture (white or wood) and use sheets, duvet covers, carpets, tables, chairs, posters/picture frames to express yourself instead, because you can always change these. You could also convince your mom/dad to buy you a poster or painting because you cleaned out your room!
  5. Have some fun extras! Now, after you got the basic furniture and sheets, time to get the little extras. Go to a variety of unpopular stores, flea markets, donation stores and more to choose items that your friends won’t have, and they’ll express you!!!
  6. Set it all up! Make your room look bigger by positioning the long side of a bed against a wall.
  7. Show it off! Have a sleepover with some of your friends or just invite them over! It will be really fun when they gasp and compliment your work. Just don’t forget to clean up after!

Tips

  • Get basic furniture
  • Don’t spend too much money on the extras. You could easily get tired of them.
  • Make sure it’s YOU. Don’t model your room after what your friends might like. Your the one who lives here!
  • Always ask your parents before painting. They could help you! Even if they say no, you can decorate the walls with posters and they’ll be happy too.

Warnings

  • Do not breath in the paint fumes! Wear a mask while painting.
